Community Health in Tea Gardens
Mental health care, eye camps, and reproductive health awareness continue to support families across Assam.
Jeevan Shiksha was started in 2017 to work with marginalised communities in Assam and Uttarakhand. In Assam, we partner with Adivasi tea garden communities. In Uttarakhand, we support the Van Gujjar community — many of whom now live in settlements without proper access to healthcare and education.
Our work began with community libraries and has grown to include mental health, livelihoods, menstrual & maternal health, nature education, and access to government services.
A collective understanding and exploration of life without division.
To develop and implement pedagogy of processes in collaboration with community, especially children and youth, to enhance mutual understanding and build a repository of knowledge.
Psychiatric services, counselling, medicines, and community field visits — supported by ANT. Awareness street plays performed by university interns break mental health stigma in tea garden communities.
Storytelling sessions, reading programmes, and 3 learning centres in Uttarakhand — supported by BookWorm and the Free Library Network. A pathway to formal school enrolment for Van Gujjar children.
Health
Mental health care, eye camps, and reproductive health awareness continue to support families across Assam.
Education
Three learning centres and community reading spaces are helping children learn through stories, books, and level-based support.
Culture
The first scripted and published books in Van Gujjari are preserving stories, songs, and local knowledge for the next generation.
Jeevan Shiksha has transformed how our children relate to learning. The library sessions and storytelling have made education something they look forward to every day.
The MITA mental health project reached our village when no one else would. The support given to our family members has been life-changing.
The nature education program opened our children's eyes to the incredible biodiversity around them. They are now confident nature guides themselves.
Join us for internships, field visits, or skill-sharing. Students from universities are welcome to come and contribute.
